There are 3 ports (well, 4 with the kickstarter port that lets you duplicate another port, but it still depends on the other 3) that can change if a player can make a purchase:
1) the port that gives 10 coins
2) the port that can adjust prices
3) the port that can give you an upgrade (acquire a merchant) (and 3 glory).
that said, it should be easy enough to check for these edge conditions and handle them. there is already similar code used elsewhere.
