It actually works -- but the UI makes it look like you can't and this causes people to not realize they can do it. (In this game it was the person I was playing against because it was their first game... but it came up before when I played the first time too.)

Extended the tiles to show that. The field the shooter is coming from has now a green border and the normal square to shoot to in the middle.
