Clerk provides diagonal upgrades, not vertical upgrades. So a cow becomes a cloak and a sheep becomes a bones. I think it’s hilarious that you can use clerk to turn fruit baskets into sheep, but that’s correct.

As KeithHendricks points out, its a diagonal upgrade.
My whale meat (3x3 red) became a fur (2x4 green) instead of a cloak (3x3 green).
The game meat (2x3 red) became flax (1x4 green) instead of skin and bones (2x3 green).

I used clerk to upgrade a 2x3 red to a 2x3 green before my overseas trading action. I already had a 2x3 green in my inventory - which I tried to upgrade in my overseas trading action. I should have ended the action with both a 2x3 blue and a 2x3 green. However, I at the end of the action, I did not have a 2x3 green - so the game effectively stole a 2x3 tile from me.

Same happened to me. Moreover the upgrade cost 4 silver (3 boats + action) even though I chose to only do 1 Upgrade for 1 Silver.

I used clerk to attempt to upgrade a 3x3 red to 3x3 green and received nothing on completion of the action. I lost both my silver and my 3x3 red.
